University Partnership

Partnering with the Community
In partnership with community leaders and residents of Chester, Pennsylvania, Widener University launched the Widener Partnership Charter School (WPCS) in September 2006. Located adjacent to the Widener University campus, the WPCS is a K-8 elementary school serving the families of the Chester-Upland School District. The school is in its eights year of operation, and currently has an enrollment of over 400 kindergarten through eighth grade students.  In accomplishing its mission of developing students academically, emotionally and physically, the WPCS receives a variety of supports from university faculty, students, and facilities.
University Provided Supports:
  • Education faculty members and students who work regularly in the school to support and enhance the instruction of classroom teachers;
  • Graduate students from Education, Social Work, Clinical Psychology, and Physical Therapy who provide a range of support services to charter school children and their families;
  • Widener’s Social Work Counseling Services, which assists families with issues at home that can affect student performance and well-being;
  • Use of university facilities (for example, Science Teaching Center, Art Gallery) by charter school teachers and students to enrich the curriculum;
  • Corporate, foundation, and government fundraising efforts on behalf of the charter school by the university’s development office.
